Dancer’s estate brings in £5m at Auction in Geneva

The estate of the dancer Serge Lifar recently went to auction in Geneva and it was all expected to sell for around £1 million. The buyers at the event were obviously very interested in the estate because it ended up selling for five times the expected selling price.

One of the most impressive sales of the night was a collection of drawings that Jean Cocteau had made for the book Opium. This sold for nearly 1 million Swiss Francs, which was 10 times the initial estimate. Even more incredible was the sale of two inscribed photographs of the dancer which sold for nearly half a million Swiss Francs, the initial asking price was only 300.

The curator and art critic, Andrew Renton, has recently made his first appearance in Maastricht as commercial director. Mr Renton was headhunted after leaving Goldsmiths College of Art in order to focus on bringing Marlboro Fine Art Gallery into the 21st century.

The gallery is going to be officially opening an extension to its contemporary Art range this October. Renton is responsible for directing the opening and it has been timed to happen at the same time as the Frieze Art Fair.
