Ed Ruscha’s ARTISTS ROOM tour comes to Newcastle in February 2013

ARTISTS ROOMS, the art show currently on tour, will arrive at Newcastle’s Hatton Gallery in February 2013 and brings to this northern city a stunning display of works by Ed Ruscha, the American artist.

Ed, who is based in Los Angeles, has been frequently lauded as one of the most inventive and consistent artists of the last 50 years, and this new show, inspired by pop art, showcases some of the very best examples of own wry take on life in modern America and runs from the 22nd February-22nd May.

Featuring early drawings and key paintings together with examples of the artist’s books, printmaking and photography, the exhibition will include a wide variety of works covering over 40 years of his remarkable career.

Julie Milne, Chief Curator for Art Galleries says:

We are delighted to be exhibiting the work of this major artist.  Ed Ruscha is an internationally renowned and I’d like to give our thanks to ARTIST ROOMS  for the opportunity to bring his work to Newcastle. It is fitting that the Ruscha’s work is showing at the Hatton as he has cited artist Kurt Schwitters as an influence  and Schwitters’   internationally significant Merzbarn Wall is on permanent display in the Hatton Gallery .”

The works on display are taken from ARTIST ROOMS, an inspirational collection of modern and contemporary art acquired for the nation by Tate and The National Galleries of Scotland through the generosity of Anthony d’Offay with additional support from funders, including the Art Fund. The ARTIST ROOMS tour programme, now in its fifth year, is showing at 17 museums and galleries across the UK in 2013. The tour is made possible thanks to the new support of Arts Council England and the continued support of the Art Fund.
