John Miller exhibition come to St Ives this summer

John Miller was born in 1931 and first visited Cornwall in the early 1950s. Several years later he decided to move there permanently and painted many of the beach scenes which he is best known for.

Over his painting career he has become known as one of the most famous artists working in the area and he became a fellow, in 1964, of the Royal Society of Arts.

This summer the New Craftsman Gallery, St Ives, in conjunction with the John Miller Estate, presents a celebratory exhibition to mark ten years since the artists death in 2002.

Continuing the close relationship between Miller and the New Craftsman, St Ives longest standing commercial art gallery which is currently celebrating its 50th Anniversary, the exhibition offers a unique chance to view some of the wealth of artwork that remains in Miller’s studio, a historically important legacy of paintings, sketches and constructions, including several as yet unseen works.

This special exhibition includes paintings made from his studio at the now famous Beach House in Lelant, with its magnificent views across the Hayle Estuary and St Ives Bay, as well as oil and gouache works of Venice and Goa, and his uniquely beautiful interior landscapes.

Accompanying this exhibition will be a showcase of ceramics by Matthew Chambers, whose intriguingly complex multi-layered stoneware combines traditional ceramic processes with the artists’ love of geometric and constructivist art.
