If you want to see for yourself what difference a few hours makes, then check out a new Photography exhibition at the gallery@oxo on the South Bank. A series of comparative photographs, taken by Michael Marten illustrate the spectacular tidal changes that are experienced every day down Britain’s coastline.

Taken from the same identical position at both low and high tide, this puts a whole new perspective on a daily occurrence we take for granted. Marten focuses specifically on the coastlines of Britain, taking in their vast expanses of sand, industrial estuaries, picturesque harbours and towering, white chalk cliffs.

“This exhibition reveals how the coastal landscapes we see are modified by the tide,” says Marten, who has been working on Sea Change for the past nine years. “The tidal range in Britain varies from 1 metre on parts of the North Sea coast to 15 metres – third highest in the world – in the Bristol Channel. Through this series I want to express how landscape is ever-changing, a dynamic process rather than a static image.”

Sea Change is on show at gallery@oxo, situated on London’s South Bank beside the tidal River Thames. The gallery programmes a range of events and exhibitions throughout the year – for more information visit
