The painting had just been exhibited at Christie’s in London, when it was quickly bought for twice the estimated value.

The painting is 6x6ft and displays the face of Warhol in half shadow and half light, the colours red and white. The work itself is derived from his very important period around 1967 and marks the time when he gained international fame.

It is a part of a series of 11 works from that time. The New York Museum of Modern Art owns some of these, while the rest are found in San Francisco, Munich, and in the Tate collection. This painting has been kept privately since 1974.

Over the past year the art world has often been considered saved by Asian buyers. As the international art community once again is gearing up to commence in Hong Kong for another round of large scale sales, the major publicity is settling in around the world of Andy Warhol.

Up for sale at the Christie’s sale of contemporary Asian art on May 29 will be the ‘Mao’ Andy Warhol series along with a silkscreen ink print titled Myths. Both the series and piece of art will be on display at the 2010 Hong Kong International Art Fair which will span from May 27th to May 30th.

Of particular note is Myths which is slated to sell for US $12m and is thought to be the most expensive piece of art available at the Art Fair this year.

One preliminary fact that represents the international interest that is already building in the Asian art world is the fact that online bids are already being accepted for pieces at the sales along with sales that will soon take place from Bonham’s at the International Art Fair.

Regional managing director of Christie’s Asia, Jonathon Stone, stated that the auction market is slowly starting to recovery globally due to the high demand coming out of Asia, which is expected to continue to fuel growth throughout 2010.

In fact, in 2009 Asian art was the largest type of art category that was sold via Christie’s auctions and represents roughly 15% of all art sales outside of the leading categories of modern art and Impressionist.

Pieces of art by Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol have not sold despite high hopes at a contemporary art auction that took place in New York.

However, although they did not sell, the rest of the pieces at the Christie’s sale added up to a total of about £45m which the auctioneers declared were closer to the sale totals of auctions before the recession hit.

The auction house felt that the Warhol and Basquiat pieces did not sell due to the fact they only had an appeal for collectors of the artists. The pieces were expected to have sold for about £4.5m and £7.1m respectively.

At the same time that the two collectors’ pieces did not amass any bids, other pieces by artists such as Jasper Johns and Jeff Koons sold past expectations. In fact, some items sold double what was estimated although estimates were low to encourage bidders to show.

One Warhol piece that did perform well at the auction was a £485,000 portrait of Michael Jackson. The last owner of the Jackson painting was said to have purchased it from the New York Jackson foundation.
