Winning photo in Taylor Wessing competition

The winning picture at the London National Portrait Gallery Taylor Wessing photographic contest is of a young girl, who is attempting to compete in the 2012 Paralympics Games. The photo was shot by Paul Floyd Blake.

The portrait shows Rosie Bancroft in a changing room at a swimming pool, after competing in an event. Bancroft had a foot removed when she was an infant.

Blake stated that she was a natural subject, and that he chose to shoot her after competing in an event in which she beat her personal best.

Unlike many of the photos on display at the gallery, Blake chooses not to use digital technology, because he says that it is hard to get the same level of quality out of a digital camera. Instead he uses a 5×4 Wista field camera.

The best entries from the event will be on display at the National Portrait Gallery until February 14th, when the top 60 submissions will be moved to the Gateshead Shipley art gallery.
